The Bold Life -The Present of Being

The Present of Being

Hi,

Ciao, my beautiful friend, from Florence, Italy!

Another week in Italy, and I am blown away by how quickly the time is passing.

These past few weeks have brought me one of the most beautiful lessons, and perhaps one of the very reasons I was guided to come here.

The power of presence.

I found myself feeling overwhelmed this past week, not because anything was necessarily wrong, but because there was so much I was doing and so much more I wanted to experience.

I’m running my business, leading my team, supporting my clients, and bringing a creative project to life. At the same time, I’m building a life in another country where I don’t speak the language, making new friends, learning Italian, taking care of my body, and wanting to experience all that Florence has to offer.

And somewhere in the middle of all of this, I caught myself.

I didn’t come all the way to Italy just to recreate the pace of the life I already knew.

I came here to actually live it.

One of the things I love most about Italy is the way Italians seem to appreciate the simple pleasures of life. There is an art to being present, to enjoying a meal, a conversation, a beautiful afternoon, without the constant need to rush to the next thing.

And I find myself wanting more of that.

Because for so much of my life, I was driven by ambition, productivity, and achievement.

What if, in all the doing, we’re missing the very life we’ve worked so hard to create?

In my younger years, I had this insatiable thirst for life and what felt like an endless abundance of energy. Living in New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, traveling, building businesses, and pursuing my dreams.

And I loved it.

That ambition served me well. I’ve lived what feels like ten different lives and had ten different careers, and I’m grateful for every single one of them.

In so many ways, I feel like I’m just getting started.

I still have big dreams. I’m still ambitious, creative, and excited about everything I want to bring into the world.

But what I want now is also the softer side of life.

I want to slow down enough to appreciate what I’ve created.

I want to relish the moments instead of rushing through them.

I want to enjoy my life as much as I enjoy creating it.

And this week, I found myself asking a question that stopped me in my tracks.

What if, in all the doing, I’m actually missing the present of being?

And what if I could get everything that truly matters done by slowing down, rather than speeding up?

For me, the answer wasn’t about adding more.

It was about taking away.

What can I remove from my life that doesn’t need to be here right now?

Where am I giving my time and energy to things that aren’t actually important to me?

Where am I saying yes out of habit, obligation, or fear of missing out, when what I really want is to say no?

And perhaps most importantly, where am I not honoring the boundaries and commitments I’ve made to myself?

Because even here, in beautiful Florence, I can find myself thinking about everything I should be doing, everywhere I should be going, and all the experiences I don’t want to miss.

But I don’t want to spend three months in Italy chasing experiences only to realize I wasn’t fully present for them.

I want to be here.

Fully.

And that means being intentional about what I choose, where I spend my time, and what I allow into my days.

It means recognizing that I don’t have to do everything to have an extraordinary experience.

Sometimes, the most beautiful thing we can do for ourselves is create the space to enjoy the life we already have.

And I think this is especially important for us as women in midlife.

Because so many of us have spent years doing what we thought we were supposed to do.

We built the careers, took care of everyone, fulfilled the responsibilities, pursued the achievements, and checked the boxes.

We became very good at doing.

But somewhere along the way, we may have forgotten to ask ourselves whether the life we were so busy creating was the life we actually wanted to be living.

I know that feeling.

For years, I found tremendous fulfillment in helping others. I built a career around being of service, supporting women, and making a difference in people’s lives.

And I still love that work deeply.

But there came a point when I had to ask myself:

Where am I in all of this?

Where are my dreams, my desires, my joy, and the experiences I want to have simply because they make me happy?

Not because they’re productive.

Not because they’re helping someone else.

Not because they’re leading to another achievement.

But because this is my life, and I get to enjoy it.

And I know, for some women, even reading that can bring up the feeling that it’s selfish to put your own happiness first.

But I see it differently.

Your life is actually yours to live.

You’re allowed to want more joy, more fun, more adventure, more beauty, and more fulfillment simply because you want them.

And when you’re genuinely happy and fulfilled, that joy becomes something you naturally bring into the world and share with the people around you.

You don’t have to earn your happiness through how much you accomplish or how much you do for everyone else.

You get to experience it now.

Which brings me back to the gift Italy is giving me.

It’s teaching me that a beautiful life isn’t just about the extraordinary things we create or accomplish.

It’s also about our ability to appreciate them while we’re living them.

And that requires presence.

It requires discernment.

It requires being willing to say no to something good because you’ve already said yes to something that matters more.

So, my beautiful friend, here’s what I want to invite you to consider this week.

What could you take away from your life that would allow you to experience more of it?

Maybe it’s a commitment that no longer feels aligned.

Maybe it’s the clutter in your home, the noise in your mind, or the endless list of things you believe you should be doing.

Maybe it’s saying no more often and honoring the boundaries you’ve already set for yourself.

Or perhaps, for you, it’s the opposite. Maybe you’ve become so accustomed to your routines and responsibilities that what you really need is to add something that brings you joy.

Only you know.

And that’s the beauty of this season of life.

We get to choose.

We get to decide what matters, what stays, what goes, and what kind of life we want to experience.

We don’t have to keep living by the rules we once believed we had to follow.

As for me, I’m choosing to slow down, be more intentional, and appreciate the extraordinary gift of this chapter I’m living.

Because I didn’t come to Florence to see how much I could fit into three months.

I came to experience what it feels like to build a life I love, in a way that feels good to actually live.

And perhaps that’s the greatest lesson of all.

The life we’re working so hard to create is also the life we’re meant to enjoy.

Not someday.

Now.

So here’s to doing less of what doesn’t matter, making room for more of what does, and remembering that there is so much beauty in simply being here.

I’d love to hear from you. Where in your life are you feeling called to slow down, simplify, or make more room for what brings you joy? Hit reply and tell me. I always love hearing what these letters bring up for you.

With love from Florence,

Rewrite the Rules,

Melissa Kathryn
